In other words, McAfee customers can be up to 372 signatures out of date per day, or up to 1116 signatures out of date after a weekend. Sophos avoids this problem.

Jeff Green, the Head of McAfee Avert Labs, recently blogged on the company’s website regarding the epidemic increase of malware in 2007. Green states that McAfee had to add 372 new detections per calendar day or 527 new detections per business day in 2007.

In other words, McAfee customers can be up to 372 signatures out of date per day, or up to 1116 signatures out of date after a weekend. Note that McAfee Avert Labs only releases signature updates at 15:00GMT, except during emergencies, and does not operate during weekends. These were evidenced in the recent Cascadia Labs ‘Endpoint Security for Enterprise’ review.

Green also added that “the average lifespan of malware with criminal intent may only be 5 to 7 hours.” In other words, even if McAfee releases a new signature it is too late for its customers.

These examples highlight why SophosLabs operates the way it does, and how it differentiates itself from the competition – 24/7 operation, global labs, integrated threat analysis, day zero protection including Behavioral Genotype Protection, automated threat analysis system, and fast response to outbreaks. You do not see all these from other vendors’ labs.
