We were using Cisco QOS to manage traffic on our frame relay T1 lines between the schools and the district. During a pilot project for a new student information system (SIS) several sites’ T1s were constantly at full utilization. Users complained that the student information system had some serious lag. It was difficult or impossible for data entry personnel and teachers to perform their jobs and test the new SIS. After testing with packet monitors it was discovered that the traffic saturating the T1s was not related to the student information system but rather non-critical applications and Internet traffic. It was clear the Cisco QOS was not meeting our needs.
We set up a Packetshaper trial with Secure Content Solutions and after the initial discovery period the bandwidth hogging services were immediately apparent. After a short conference call with an SCS engineer and some quick configuration changes, including adding a few policies and partitions on the core shaper and at the congested edge test point, the SIS worked like a dream. (and so did other network based applications!)
We have since installed Packetshapers at 5 critical locations, including the main Internet connection, and have plans to implement several more in the future.
